4th MicroFrancophonie Summit Set for Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye

GRENOBLE, France – The 4th MicroFrancophonie Summit, an annual gathering dedicated to French-speaking micronations, is scheduled to take place in the picturesque village of Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye on August 24 and 25, 2024. This event, required by the charter of the Organization de la MicroFrancophonie (OMF), serves as the primary meeting to promote harmony and cohesion among its members. While conducted entirely in French, the summit warmly welcomes non-francophones to celebrate the elegance and cultural richness of the French language.

An Immersive and Inspiring Weekend

Attendees can look forward to an extraordinary experience filled with emotions, sharing, and inspiring encounters. The historical village of Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye will serve as the backdrop for this unique event, fostering the flourishing diversity and splendor of the MicroFrancophonie.

What is the MicroFrancophonie?

The OMF is an inter-micronational organization established in May 2015 to promote harmony between French-speaking micronations. Its main objective is to serve as a platform for promoting the French-speaking world and strengthening cohesion among its members. The OMF currently comprises 27 member micronations and one observer.

To join the organization, a micronation must submit a request to the OMF Council, which reviews the application and puts it to a vote by an absolute majority of members. Applicants must meet several conditions, such as maintaining a dedicated website, existing for at least one year, upholding peaceful relations in the micronational scene, respecting fundamental rights and freedoms, and not being a virtual micronation. Additionally, to qualify as a French-speaking member, a micronation must use French in its community, among its citizens, or in its communications. Failure to meet these criteria can result in exclusion by a two-thirds majority vote of the members.

Goals of the MicroFrancophonie Summit

The summit aims to strengthen bonds among French-speaking micronations, encourage the exchange of ideas, and celebrate the vibrant spirit of the Francophone world. It provides a platform for micronations to share their cultures, discuss common challenges, and promote the French language. Attendees will be swept away by a collective adventure driven by shared passion and the vibrant energy of meeting fellow Francophones.

The Role of the Fomoris

The Fomoris, a nomadic nation in perpetual diaspora, are hosting this year’s summit. Founded in 1991 in Gentilly, the Fomoris have developed a unique identity that transcends geographical boundaries, with a deep cultural attachment to places significant to their history. Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye, a site for summer medieval animations, has become a spiritual home and a vibrant epicenter of the Fomoris’ collective identity. As hosts, the Fomoris aim to provide an immersive and culturally rich experience for all attendees.

Accommodation

Ensuring attendees’ comfort, organizers have selected charming accommodations within the village and its surroundings. Additional lodging options are available in Saint-Marcellin, and for those seeking a more immersive experience, camping with a Fomori family is an option.

Travel and Accessibility

Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye is accessible by road, rail, or air. The A49/E713 highway, Valence-TGV train station, and Grenoble-Alpes-Isère airport offer various travel options. Adventure seekers can walk the via Adresca, a variant of the Camino de Santiago, for a unique journey.
