Injured Hiker Rescued by Fellow Citizens Near Nimis

On December 1, 2024, a hiker exploring the rugged terrain near Ladonia, off the marked path, suffered a fall and injured his ankle to the point he could not walk or climb back up to level ground. Ladonia’s Privateer, Captin Jocki and fellow citizen Christer Brillan Hodén were able to carry their injured compatriot, Carson Lueders, up the challenging mountainside back to Swedish territory where they would be accessible to Swedish rescue services.

A nice trip to Nimis ended with me, Captin Jocki, having to rescue our friend who sprained or broke their foot. We struggled for several hours to get him up to level ground. Once we were up there, we built a stretcher. But all three of us were so exhausted that we couldn’t go on. As darkness fell, an ambulance and the fire department arrived with a quad bike. I could finally catch my breath.

Falls and injuries are, unfortunately, not uncommon on the rugged terrain surrounding Ladonia and there are inherent risks associated with hiking in this unique landscape. Visitors are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to safety guidelines to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.

Safety Recommendations for Hikers:

  • Follow Marked Trails: Adhere to the yellow “N” markers that guide the path to Ladonia. Straying from designated trails can lead to hazardous situations.
  • Prepare Adequately: Wear appropriate clothing and footwear suitable for the terrain and weather conditions. Carry essential supplies, including water, a first-aid kit, and a fully charged mobile phone.
  • Stay Informed: Before embarking on your journey, check local weather forecasts and be aware of any advisories or warnings.
  • Be Aware of Special Conditions: Right now, all of the leaves have fallen from the trees and cover the ground, obscuring from view tree roots and rocks and all manner of things that might cause you to trip. Additionally, the fallen leaves can be extremely slippery, especially if wet.

This unfortunate incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and preparedness in ensuring the safety of all who traverse Ladonia’s paths and serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures and the critical role of readiness and mutual support.
